SMTP is the protocol for SENDING email (POP3 for RECEIVING)
On a public network you cannot use just any ISPs SMTP
server settings, neccesary security restrictions by ISPs
and network admins prevent this.
You can solve this difficulty by using webmail or Apple's
Me service. Alternatively you can set an authenticated SMTP
server to send whilst still receiving on your existing POP3
settings.
