- Begun as Lewes Wireless Broadband Project, Lewes Community Internet is the broader initiative of disabled people working together to bring community internet access in the county town of Lewes and is part of the Community Internet movement. We are all volunteers engaged with The Oyster Project www.oysterproject.org.uk
- As a not-for-profit social enterprise project we are committed to promoting internet access and giving everyone a chance to enjoy the benefits of the internet.
- Our wifi network (signal = lwbnet.org.uk) is a low power wireless router based network connecting the local community. By sharing resources, the costs are also shared, making broadband internet access more affordable for all. We offer a low cost service but may also be able to assist registered disabled people, the elderly and others. We operate a top-up pay-as-you-go system that is easy to subscribe to for both Apple Mac and Windows users. Pay-as-you-go means you only pay when you want access. You only need to know your own email address and to remember a password you chose.
- We began the project in 2006 as a trial in order to establish the reliability and suitability of meshing software and the hardware available.
- In 2007 having trialled 4 different systems we adopted the Meraki Networks professional system as being the most reliable, practical and suitable-for-use system. We now have many nodes and hotspots in operation and are currently running the professional version of Meraki Network.
